Velotric Discover 1 Certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL2849 and UL2271) for ‘Gold-Star’ Electric Bikes Safety Standard
The Velotric Discover 1 has recently become UL2849 and UL2271 certified, two of the most rigorous safety standards in the e-bike industry.
At Velotric, we've always wanted to create a bike that balances getting the best key components, while keeping costs down. This hasn't come at the expense of safety, which is and always has been one of our core values.
So go ahead—ride with a peace of mind on your Discover 1.
What does being UL Certified mean and why does it matter?
Being UL Certified refers to any product or service that has passed standards set by UL, LLC (previously known as Underwriters Laboratories), a safety organization that sets industry-wide standards on new products.
UL has a global footprint, with customers in over 100 countries, and works with over 60% of the Fortune 500 and the Global 500. Their software is used by over 10,000 organizations across nearly every industry. They’ve also helped set over 1,600 safety standards, making the world a safer place.
What is UL2849?UL2849 is, in summary, the certification which checks for the entire electronic system in e-bikes and pedelec cycles (aka EPACs, or electrically power-assisted cycles). Specifically:
- Electrical train system
- Battery & Charger system
- Display
- Throttle
- Motor & Motor controller
The UL2849 test examines the entire system combination for risk of electric shock or other electrocution hazards.
We’re delighted that the Velotric Discover 1 has passed all the tests under UL2849 under the highest level of regulatory compliance. In other words, the Discover 1 passed with flying colors, which means a safer ride for you.
What is UL2271?UL2271 is a standard which specifically checks for batteries in light electric vehicles. Due to most battery compositions being a potential fire hazard, the UL2271 specifically checks to ensure a battery application is better protected against use cases, such as crushing, physical impact, thermal cycle, water, and UV light exposure.
To maintain this standard, the Velotric team admits quarterly audits from UL to verify our manufacturing process, materials, and designs to ensure our bike’s consistent quality across production runs.
The Standard Recognized by Industry LeadersThis standard was set in 2013 by a multinational technical committee that included participants from DuPont, LG Chemical, NASA, General Motors, Ford, the US Army, and Transport Canada among many others.
The Discover 1’s Tesla-grade 692wh removable battery is certified by LG and Samsung. As a key component that affects the longevity of the bike, we’re delighted that the Discover 1’s battery has also passed the UL2271 test.
