Troubleshooting Common Electric Bike Problems (Definitive Guide)

Even a high-quality ebike can run into problems. This electric bike troubleshooting guide covers the most common ones, what to check first, and when to stop riding and contact support.

Most issues come down to a loose connection, a low battery, low tire pressure or a dirty drivetrain, and many can be sorted in a few minutes. Others involve the battery, brakes or wiring, where the safe answer is to stop and get help.

Start Here: Three Quick Checks

Before you dig into a specific problem, these three steps solve a surprising number of issues:

  1. Restart the ebike. Switch it off, wait a few seconds, and switch it on again.
  2. Reseat the battery. Switch off, remove the ebike battery, make sure the contacts are clean and dry, and lock it back in place until it is fully secure.
  3. Check the basics. Confirm the battery has enough charge and check the tire pressure with a gauge.

Before you inspect any connector, wiring or drivetrain part, switch the ebike off and remove the battery first.

Stop Riding Immediately If You Notice These Signs

Some problems are not DIY jobs. Stop using the ebike and contact support if you see any of the following:

  • Battery: swelling, unusual heat, a burning or chemical smell, smoke, or leaking fluid.
  • Charger or cable: overheating, a deformed plug, scorch marks or a burning smell.
  • Brakes: a lever that reaches the handlebar, or braking that is clearly weaker than normal.
  • Frame or fork: any crack, bend or deformation.
  • Wiring or controller: melted insulation, burn marks or discoloration.

If a battery is damaged or overheating, stop charging it, move it away from anything flammable, and do not try to open or repair it. If you see smoke or fire, leave the area and call your local emergency number.

Quick Diagnosis Table

Find your symptom, check the most likely causes first, and jump to the matching section below.

Symptom Common causes Check first Get help if
Display blank or error code Battery not seated, low charge, loose display connection Reseat the battery, charge it, look up the code The screen stays blank or the code returns
Motor cuts out or no assist Low battery, overheating, brake cutoff, sensor issue Battery level, let it cool, check that levers return fully It repeats at a normal charge level
Battery will not charge Outlet or charger issue, wet port, temperature protection Try another outlet, check the indicator light, warm the battery to room temperature It still will not charge, or the battery looks damaged
Range is much shorter Low tire pressure, cold, heavy load, high assist level Tire pressure, assist level, conditions The drop is sudden under the same conditions
Flat or soft tire Puncture, loose valve, long-term low pressure Look for objects, check the valve, test with a gauge The tire is cracked or you cannot fix the leak
Weak or noisy brakes Worn pads, dirty rotors, loose lever Pads, rotors, lever feel The lever feels spongy or braking is weak
Chain noise or poor shifting Dirty or dry chain, cable stretch Clean and lubricate the chain, test the gears The chain is worn or the derailleur is bent

Power, Display and Motor Problems

These problems usually show up as an ebike that will not turn on, a display with nothing on it, or assist that comes and goes. They are often caused by a low battery or a connection that has worked loose.

Ebike display problem

Ebike Display Not Working or Showing an Error Code

The display is your window into the system. When it stays blank or shows a code, the bike is usually telling you something specific.

How to Check

  1. Switch the ebike off, remove the battery, and reinstall it until it is fully locked in place.
  2. Check that the battery has charge. If it has been unused for a while, charge it with the original charger.
  3. Make sure the battery contacts are clean and dry. Do not bend or force them.
  4. With the power off, look at the display cable for pinching, fraying or a loose plug.
  5. If a code is shown, look it up in your manual. [*Velotric Error Codes Troubleshooting Guide]
Get help if the display stays blank after reseating and charging the battery, or if the same error code returns.

Ebike Motor Cuts Out or Pedal Assist Not Working

Pedal assist (PAS) adds power while you pedal. If it stops working, you are riding a regular bike, a heavy one. Intermittent assist usually points to one of a few causes: low battery, overheating, a brake cutoff switch, or a sensor that is dirty or out of position.

How to Check

  1. Check the battery level. Many systems reduce or cut assist when the battery is very low.
  2. If you have been climbing or carrying a heavy load, stop and let the motor and battery cool before trying again.
  3. Check that both brake levers return fully. A lever that stays slightly pulled can keep the brake cutoff switch active and stop the motor.
  4. Look at the pedal sensor area for mud, dirt or debris and clean it gently.
  5. With the power off and the battery removed, check that visible connectors are seated. They should fit easily. Never force a connector.

If the sensor magnet ring looks dirty or slightly out of position, clean it, and leave any adjustment to a bike shop unless your manual describes the procedure for your model.

Get help if assist keeps cutting out at a normal charge level, or if the motor keeps driving while you brake.

Ebike Throttle Not Working

Some ebikes have a throttle as well as pedal assist, which lets the motor run without pedaling. If your model has one and it stops working, the cause is often dirt, wear or a loose connection.

ebike throttle

How to Check

  1. With the power off, check that the throttle moves freely and springs back on its own.
  2. Clean any dirt or grit from around the throttle housing.
  3. Check that the throttle cable and connector are intact and not pinched.

If the throttle sticks in the pulled position, do not ride. A throttle that does not return can keep driving the motor. Have it replaced by a bike shop.

Ebike Controller or Wiring Problems

The controller coordinates the motor, battery, sensors and display. Signs of a controller or wiring issue include a completely dead bike, power cutting out over bumps, or a display that flickers.

ebike controller

How to Check

  1. Switch off and remove the battery before touching anything.
  2. Look for pinched, frayed or damaged cables, especially where they bend near the handlebar and frame.
  3. Gently press visible connectors together. They should seat smoothly. Many are keyed so they only fit one way, so never force them.
  4. Look for moisture or discoloration in connectors.

Do not open the controller, and do not try to test wiring with electrical meters. If you find damaged insulation, burn marks or melted plastic, stop using the ebike and contact support.

Battery and Charging Problems

The battery is the most valuable part of your ebike, so treat battery issues carefully. Use only the original or an approved charger, and never use a battery or charger that looks damaged.

Ebike Battery

Ebike Battery Not Charging

If the battery does not charge, the cause is often simple: a dead outlet, a dirty port or a battery that is too cold or too hot. Many batteries will not charge outside their safe temperature range.

How to Check

  1. Plug the charger into a different outlet and check that its indicator light turns on. If you have access to a second approved charger, try it.
  2. Check that the charging port and the charger plug are clean and dry.
  3. If the battery has been outside in the cold or in a hot vehicle, bring it indoors and let it reach room temperature before charging. See our winter ebike storage guide for temperature guidance.
  4. Check the battery and charger for swelling, cracks, heat or damage. If you see any, stop and contact support.
Get help if the battery still will not charge, or if it charges but shuts off during normal riding.

Ebike Range Suddenly Shorter

Range depends on many things at once, so a shorter range is not always a sign of a faulty battery.

  • Tire pressure: soft tires add rolling resistance. Check with a gauge.
  • Temperature: cold weather reduces range. See our snow riding guide for cold-weather tips.
  • Load and terrain: heavy cargo, headwinds and hills use more energy.
  • Assist level: higher levels use more battery.
  • Battery age: capacity declines gradually over many charge cycles. See how long an ebike battery lasts.
Get help if the range drops sharply on the same route, in the same conditions, with the same tire pressure and assist level.

Battery Will Not Charge or Turn On After Long Storage

If an ebike has sat unused for a long time with a low battery, the battery may have entered a protection state. Do not keep trying to charge it, and do not try to revive it yourself. Contact support and describe how long it was stored.

To avoid this, store the battery indoors at room temperature and partly charged, and check it periodically. Follow your model's storage instructions in our winter ebike storage guide.

Ebike Got Wet

Ebikes are built for rain, but water can still cause trouble in connectors, the display and the charging port, especially after pressure washing or a deep puddle.

  1. Stop riding, switch off, and remove the battery.
  2. Wipe the bike and battery with a dry cloth and leave them to dry in a ventilated room. Do not use a heat gun or hair dryer.
  3. Do not charge the battery until the charging port is completely dry.
  4. If the display, motor or lights behave strangely after drying, contact support.

Tires, Brakes and Drivetrain Problems

These are the mechanical parts that wear with every ride. Most of the jobs here are quick, and a regular check prevents the majority of them.

Flat Tire or Slow Leak

A flat is the most common ebike problem. Do not ride on a flat tire, because it can damage the tire and rim.

How to Check

  1. Check the tire pressure with a gauge. If it keeps dropping, you have a leak.
  2. Look over the tire for thorns, glass, nails or cuts, and remove any objects carefully.
  3. Check that the valve is tight and straight.
  4. To find a slow leak, brush soapy water over the valve and tire. Bubbles show where air is escaping.

Removing a rear wheel with a hub motor involves cables, so if you are not confident, have a bike shop do it. Replace tires that are cracked, bulging or have exposed casing.

Ebike Brakes Not Working Well

Your brakes are essential for safe riding. There are different brake types, and the cause of a problem depends on which one you have. Read more about mechanical and hydraulic disc brakes.

How to Check

  1. Inspect the rotors for mud, oil or grime. Clean them and see whether braking improves.
  2. Look at the pads and rotors for wear, scuffs and cracks. See Velotric's brake pad inspection guide for the replacement limit.
  3. Squeeze each lever with the ebike stationary. It should feel firm. A spongy lever or one that reaches the grip needs service.
  4. If a brake squeals, check for contaminated pads or rotors, and keep lubricants and sprays away from them.
  5. If the brake cutoff seems stuck, check that the levers return fully. If they are jammed, do not ride.

Get help if you are unsure about the cause, if the lever feels spongy, or if braking is clearly weaker. Do not ride with unreliable brakes.

Chain Noise, Skipping or Poor Shifting

A dirty, dry or worn chain is the usual cause of noise and rough shifting.

  1. Wipe the chain with a clean rag and look for rust or stiff links.
  2. Apply a suitable chain lubricant to the rollers, turn the cranks to spread it, and wipe off the excess.
  3. Shift through the gears on a clear surface to check for skipping or sticking.
  4. Keep lubricant away from the brakes.

Get help if the chain keeps skipping after cleaning, if the chain is worn, or if the derailleur is bent.

Strange Noises and Loose Parts

The moment a noise happens tells you where to look.

  • While pedaling: check the chain, pedals and cranks.
  • When braking: check the pads and rotors for wear or contamination.
  • Over bumps: check the fenders, rack, bags and anything loose on the frame.
  • A steady hum or grinding from the wheel: check for debris in the wheel or brake and stop riding if it is persistent.

With the power off, check the wheels, handlebar, stem, saddle, pedals and rack for looseness. Use the correct tool and the torque specified for each fastener, and do not tighten bolts by feel.

When to Contact Support or a Bike Shop
